The high seas forecast issued by the Met Office, on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, on Thursday 08 January 2009 at 0800

There are storm warnings in West Central Section


The General synopsis
At 080000UTC, high 66 north 20 west 1003 expected 68 north 18 west 1005 by 090000UTC. Low 67 north 21 west 990 and high 50 north 08 west 1030 both losing their identities by same time. New lows expected 66 north 18 west 985, 52 north 54 west 967 and 41 north 21 west 1013 by that time

  Wind:  Easterly or southeasterly 4 or 5, increasing 6 or 7 in west.
  Sea State:  Moderate, increasing rough in west.
  Weather:  Fair.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good.

Shannon
  Wind:  Southerly 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9 later.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough in west.
  Weather:  Occasional rain later.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good.

Rockall
  Wind:  Southerly 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8, perhaps severe gale 9 later.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough in west.
  Weather:  Occasional rain later.

Bailey

East Northern Section
  Wind:  Southerly or southeasterly 5 to 7, increasing gale 8 or severe gale 9 in east for a time, becoming westerly 4 or 5 for a time.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough, increasing high in east for a time.
  Weather:  Rain then squally showers, wintry in north.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

West Northern Section
 In north
  Wind:  Cyclonic, becoming southerly for a time, 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8, decreasing 4 in northwest later.
  Sea State:  Rough, occasionally very rough.
  Weather:  Rain or snow, then squally wintry showers.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good, occasionally poor. Light icing in far northwest.

West Northern Section
 In south
  Wind:  Southerly, 4 in east at first, otherwise 5 to 7, becoming cyclonic 7 to severe gale 9 later.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough, increasing very rough later.
  Weather:  Squally showers, some wintry, then rain or sleet.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

East Central Section
  Wind:  Southerly 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9, veering westerly 4 or 5 for a time.
  Sea State:  Rough or very rough, occasionally high in east at first.
  Weather:  Rain or squally showers.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

West Central Section
 In west
  Wind:  Westerly 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8, backing southerly or southwesterly 7 to severe gale 9, occasionally storm 10 later.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough increasing rough or very rough, occasionally high later.
  Weather:  Squally showers, wintry in north, then rain, with fog patches in south for a time.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good, occasionally poor, becoming very poor in south for a time.

West Central Section
 In east
  Wind:  Westerly 4 or 5 backing southerly or southeasterly 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 in north later.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough increasing rough or very rough.
  Weather:  Squally showers, wintry in north, then rain, with fog patches in south for a time.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good, occasionally poor, becoming very poor in south for a time.

Denmark Strait
  Wind:  Cyclonic, becoming northerly in north later, 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough in south.
  Weather:  Rain or wintry showers, with snow in northwest.
  Visibility:  Moderate or poor, occasionally very poor, becoming good in southwest later. Light or moderate icing in north and west, temperatures ms02 to ms05.

North Iceland
  Wind:  Southwesterly 5 to 7 in far southeast at first, otherwise northeasterly 4 or 5 becoming variable 3 or 4 then later cyclonic 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough.
  Weather:  Rain in southeast, snow in northwest.
  Visibility:  Moderate or poor, occasionally very poor. Light or moderate icing in northwest later, temperatures ms02 to ms05.

Norwegian Basin
 In north
  Wind:  Northerly or northeasterly 5 to 7 becoming variable 3 or 4, then southeasterly 5 to 7 later.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough.
  Weather:  Rain or showers.
  Visibility:  Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

  Wind:  Westerly backing southerly 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8.
  Sea State:  Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough later.
  Weather:  Rain at times, becoming mainly fair in southeast.
