Mitigating climate change
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its third report on Friday 4 May 2007 as part of its Fourth Assessment Review.
The latest findings from IPCC Working Group III focus on mitigating climate change. The report provides the best estimates yet on what measures can be taken across various economic sectors to lessen the severity of the impact of changes to our climate.
While advising governments on mitigation and adaptation strategies, the Met Office works with a number of organisations to help them consider the impacts of inevitable climate change. It acts as sponsor and co-chair of the climate change panel of the Lighthill Risk Network (LRN), through which the organisation gives advice to the insurance industry. It is one example of how Met Office expertise can help companies adapt to and mitigate climate change by forming clear business strategies and operations.
With the drive to reduce emissions, energy markets worldwide are looking to renewable sources of power and the Met Office is also building a number of relationships with companies exploiting alternative sources.
Cathy Durston, a senior business manager for the Met Office said: "Our work with LRN is just one way we can help business prepare for tomorrow. Through understanding business impacts, climate models and data are tailored to answer key operational and strategic questions. Our world-leading science capability is dedicated to reducing the risks and businesses exposure to climate change."

Notes:
The Met Office is the UK’s National Weather Service, providing world-renowned scientific excellence in weather and climate change.
The underpinning science for WG3 comes from reports issued earlier this year by Working Groups I & II. A significant part of that science came from research and studies carried out by the Met Office Hadley Centre.
Met Office climate change consultancy provides data and risk-management services that are used by other government departments and agencies, the private sector and the public to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
The IPCC was formed by the World Meteorology Organisation (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 1988.
