Easter weather update

Forecasters at the Met Office continue to predict plenty of fine and warm weather over the Bank Holiday weekend, providing ideal conditions to get out and about.

A summary of the weather for this year’s Easter weekend across the UK:

  • England and Wales are likely to be dry with light winds, variable amounts of cloud and spells of sunshine. It will turn pleasantly warm in many places as temperatures reach highs between 17 and 19 °C, and as high as 21 °C (70 °F) in sheltered spots. It will be cooler on some coasts.
  • Scotland and Northern Ireland look likely to see a lot of dry and bright weather over the Easter break with some sunny intervals. Cloud may increase at times through the weekend but temperatures should still reach 17 °C in sheltered areas.

Just as the dates for Easter varies from one year to the next, so does the UK weather in March and April. Looking back through the Met Office archives and Easter weather over recent decades, the differences in weather have been marked to say the least, as the records show:

1 to 4 April 1983: snow fell across large parts of the country. Up to 15 cm of snow was reported in parts of southern England, whilst there was hail, thunder and snow over northern areas of the UK.

20 to 23 April 1984: temperatures soar with the highest holiday temperature of 26 °C recorded at Jersey, in the Channel Islands on Easter day.

21 to 24 April 2000: heavy rain and thunderstorms bring a soggy Easter for many areas across the UK, with several locations recording over 12 mm (half an inch) of rain. 24.4 mm of rain was recorded at Lake Vyrnwy, Powys on Bank Holiday Monday.

27 to 30 March 1964: a distinct lack of sunshine through this holiday weekend, thanks to cloud brought in on a cold easterly wind. Some central and southern places failed to see any sunshine over the entire weekend.

4 to 7 April 1969: plenty of sunshine for many areas throughout this Easter, with areas of north-west Scotland topping the sunshine table on Easter Day, with of 12 hours of sunshine.
