Lighthill Risk Network

Insurance - Lighthill Risk Network

We have partnered with the Lighthill Risk Network to form an Expert Panel (an interactive forum) to discuss the implications of climate change for the insurance and reinsurance community. We will be providing information and consultancy to the London market to inform strategic climate change planning and to understand the vulnerability of and opportunities for insurers and re-insurers.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) advises the world's largest institutional investor collaboration on the business implications of climate change. The CDP are the world’s largest repository of information on how businesses view climate risk.  As global experts in weather and climate science we have teamed up with the CDP to provide businesses with a comprehensive climate risk management service.

CBI

CBI Task Force

The CBI Task Force on Climate Change is uniting the bosses from the UK's top companies to define what action business needs to take to reduce their impact and thrive in our changing conditions. The companies involved include Tesco, BP, Barclays and British Airways.

The Met Office Hadley Centre supplied the underlying science to the Stern Review on the risks on climate change which is the Task Force's starting point. Met Office Consulting has worked with the CBI Task Force on climate change to produce a report (PDF, 157 kb) which identifies how businesses will need to adapt to our changing climate, recognising both the risks and opportunities of climate change.

Tropical Storm and hurricane prediction

The Met Office is at the forefront of tropical storm forecasting capability for the coming seasons on the back of its accurate short range forecasts and world leading climate change research. Through a range of climate models, run dozens of times into the future the likely numbers of storms can be forecast. The risks of extreme seasons like 2005 when Katrina hit the USA can also be assessed.

Working with three leading energy companies, Met Office Consulting was commissioned to qualitatively assess the scale of climate change impacts to enable the UK energy industry to anticipate the impacts of climate change and plan to adapt.

Forecaster

Meteorological weather systems instalment

We are working with a national met. service to inform them on their Numerical Weather Prediction modelling.  This will involve the deployment of experts into their organisation to understand their issues and help them to design their model.
